Related Work Experience

Pendleton Woolen Mills

Portland, OR

Feb 2005-July 2007

.  Most recently I was the Home Merchandising Assistant at Pendleton Woolen Mills for the Wholesale Catalog in the Home and Blankets Division. My duties included preparing samples for photoshoots and helping them to run smoothly, coordinating logistics and shipping for trade shows, shooting prototypes, managing our sample account, and taking pictures for the company newsletter. Last Christmas I shot the ad that appeared in the holiday gift guide in Portland Monthly. I am accustomed to working on tight deadlines to organize products for shows and shot counts. In addition to my work with samples I also scanned and made digital files of all of the storycards and patches for the blankets. Each Native American blanket that Pendleton produces comes with a patch and a storycard and since Pendleton has been around since 1863 there are hundreds of each and now any employee in their network has access to these images.

StudioMax

Beaverton, OR

April 2004-Jan 2005

. I started out at StudioMax as a photo assistant and three months later became a principal photographer. We specialized in portraiture with the main focus on children’s and family photography. We traveled to ten different states taking our props and wardrobe with us. I was on the road three weeks out of every month and we often had 25 appointments a day. This job was challenging but also very rewarding, I learned to work at a fast pace and how to manage a heavy file load.

Honors and Awards

Abrams Scholarship 1997

.   The Abrams select 15 high school juniors every year to receive an artistic scholarship to study a chosen discipline the summer before senior year. I was selected to study photography for six weeks at a college level, at the Maryland Institute and College of Art in Baltimore, MD.

KINSA Award 1998 for “Justin”

.   KINSA is a newspaper competition sponsored by Kodak that starts at a local level and ends internationally. I beat out hundreds of adults at the age of seventeen to win in Birmingham, AL. My photograph was published on the front page of the Arts and Leisure section of the Birmingham News.

Brookwood Purchase Award 1998 for “Janice”

.   Brookwood is a gallery in Birmingham that holds a citywide competition every spring for all city high school students. Only one photograph is chosen each year to be purchased and installed in the gallery’s permanent collection.

 Other Work Experience

Doc’s Seafood Shack

March-Sept 2003

Gulf Shores, AL

.   I took this seasonal job as a bartender to save up money to move to Portland. Bartending in a busy restaurant on the Gulf of Mexico taught me many business skills. Stocking and ordering alcohol taught me about accounting, supply/demand, and organization. Mixing drinks taught me that things are done a certain way for a certain reason. When I made a customer’s drink perfectly it was b/c I added the proper ingredients in the proper order. This taught me to trust the opinions of people that have worked in a company longer than I have and also to try to learn something from everyone that I work with. Plus as a bartender you learn how to engage anyone in conversation and this is also a valuable skill as a photographer.

Cobblestone Tours

March-Dec 2002

Savannah, GA

.   After I graduated from college and I was working on my portfolio I took a seasonal job as a tour guide with Cobblestone Tours in Savannah, GA.  At night I took groups around Savannah and told tales of our haunted city and a great deal of the history as well. During the day I answered the phone and assisted the tour coordinator by booking tours, and organizing and restocking our brochures. That was the tour company’s first summer and the photographs that I helped Jaime Caskey, the company owner, plan out and shoot still appear in the brochure and on the website, I’m the woman in the hoopskirt and bonnet carrying a lantern.
