Career Experience

Area Controller

Supported an Area Business Manager that lived in Philadelphia and managed the recycling business in that area.  Directed the financial management function and hands-on prepared financial analysis and reports. My duties included monthly accounting for three plants, including billings, vendor payments and the monthly close, SOX documentations, capital budgeting justifications, annual and five-year plans, and monthly forecasts.

Key Achievements:

·   Created pivot tables to analyze vendor inbound and customer outbound product tonnages that improved forecasting and long-range planning.

·   Developed contract models to evaluate municipal for new business pricing alternatives.

 

Waste Management, Raleigh, NC 2004 – 2005

Area Controller

Directed and prepared financial management functions including development of monthly/quarterly financial statements, financial forecasts, and budgets for multi-plant locations in the Southern region. Oversee general accounting functions, including account reconciliation, inventory valuation, SOX documentation and general ledger. Interact with Regional and Area managers and Controller concerning financial forecasts and reports.

Key Achievements:

·   Installed a new, company-developed scale system in eleven plants that automated customer billings and vendor payments by generating the appropriate paperwork as trucks crossed the scale.

 

ST. MARY’S R.B. Inc., St. Mary’s, Montana & Sun Valley, Idaho, 2003 (Six month contract)

Controller

Hired as an Interim Controller on a six-month contract to guide the accounting operations, perform cash management functions, payroll preparation, and provide management with daily and monthly performance reports.  The resort is located at Glacier National Park and operates its primary businesses of lodging, supermarket, two restaurants, retail outlets, gas pumps and two lounges from May to October each year. 

Key Achievements:

·         Consolidated financial information from three non-integrated systems into an Excel workbook.

·         Balanced daily cash receipts from all operations.

 

ELLIOTT TURBOMACHINERY COMPANY, Jeannette, Pennsylvania, 1993 – 2003

Aftermarket Division Finance Manager

Established accounting, planning and control systems for the new On-Site Services group based on construction industry standards and combined with Elliott established manufacturing procedures and corporate accounting requirements.  Hands-on management of all accounting, planning and forecasting functions for this group.  Actively involved in project analysis and estimates by working with Project Managers to develop estimating models and reviewing quotations for commercial soundness.

Key Achievements:

·   Evaluated, selected and installed Timberline construction accounting system for project job costing.

·   Prepared union payroll each week for variable headcount and for different Millwright locals depending upon where jobs were located.

·   Developed a forecast using Excel for three regions that fed information to our budget program and to Timberline for variance analyses.

 

ICF KAISER INTERNATIONAL, Fairfax, Virginia, 1980-1982 and 1989-1993

Regional Director of Finance and Administration

 

ICF Kaiser Engineers, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1991-1993

Transferred to take responsibility of accounting and planning for the Eastern region divisions, Taiwan start-up, Canadian engineering company, and project field operations. Managed staff of 28, which included accounting, planning, procurement, HR, and marketing support.

Key Achievements:

·   Developed accounting and project cost system for Taiwan start-up, hired accountant, worked with CPA firm and government officials to clarify investment rules in favor of company.

·   Negotiated purchase of refractory bricks for a steel project in Ohio with a company in Luoyong, China that saved 20% of estimated purchase price in original bid.

·   Audited contract documentation for transit projects in New York City and Boston that resulted in over $2 million cost recovery on receivables that had been written-off.

 

Kaiser Engineers Hanford, Richland, Washington

Company was a government contractor at the Hanford Nuclear Facility.  Mission was to provide engineering and construction services to the U.S. Department of Energy in support of Westinghouse and Battelle Northwest. Hired to manage all accounting and planning functions. Managed staff of 24 union clerks and exempt employees.  (Transferred to Pittsburgh)

Key Achievements:

·   Developed criteria for a new accounting and procurement system, developed bid documents, and evaluated bids before selecting Oracle Financials.

·   Received highest DOE rating in history of the company, which resulted in a higher award fee performance payment.

 

Raymond Kaiser Engineers, Oakland, California (later purchased by ICF)

Manager of Financial Analysis and Planning

Managed budgeting, forecasting and monthly financial reporting.  Performed project profitability evaluations for senior management.  Set-up government project control ledgers to develop DCAA compliant rates and to ensure accurate job cost reporting.

Key Achievements:

·   Replaced an in-house mainframe financial reporting and budgeting system with a user-friendly commercial system that allowed more employees access to financial data.

 


MATTEL TOYS, INC., Hawthorne, California, 1984-1989

Director of International Finance

Responsibilities included worldwide, non-U.S. planning and forecasting, accounting for Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Canadian subsidiaries and joint ventures. Directed the annual plan, monthly forecasts and analyses, and quarterly reviews for the International Division.  

Key Achievements:

·         Selected and installed accounting systems in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Korea and Japan.

·         Provided financial analysis support and on-site assistance for new joint ventures in India, Japan and Korea.

·         Replaced a commercial online financial planning system with a PC-based system that I developed using Lotus 1-2-3. Rolled out templates to all worldwide facilities to use. Saved $250,000 annual expense.

·         Contracted with GE Systems for a world-wide email system to transfer financial data between the home office and subsidiaries and joint ventures. Innovative at the time.

 

COMPUTERLAND CORPORATION, Hayward, California, 1982-1984

Finance Director

This privately owned company was the world’s largest franchiser of computer retail stores, subsequently acquired by Merisel Corporation and is now a franchiser and systems integrator.  Responsibilities included developing and managing the budgeting, forecasting and reporting systems and processes using Lotus 1-2-3.

  Key Achievements:

·         Integrated mainframe data from the accounting system into Lotus 1-2-3 models through direct downloads (first time done by a company).

·         Conducted seminars about managing PC support within companies for the National Accounting Association.

Key Achievements:

·         Programmed a budget system using BASIC language on a DEC PDP-1103 computer.

·         Performed financial analysis for capital budget projects that expanded the hotel and casino capacity by 50%.

 

ANCHOR HOCKING CORPORATION, Lancaster, Ohio

Senior Financial Analyst

Key Achievements:

·         Developed a forecast model using BASIC language on a time sharing computer that cut two days out of each monthly forecast period and improved forecast accuracy.

 

CITY OF COLUMBUS, Columbus, Ohio

Department Fiscal Management Officer

Key Achievements:

·         Performed financial analysis and justifications for a 30MW electric power plant fueled by solid waste collected by the City.

·         Managed space planning study for a new municipal court building project.

·         Managed contracts to build three sanitation transfer stations and a contract to re-route the City sanitation trucks to improve collection productivity.

·         Developed a COBOL language electric utility customer billing system.

·         Developed a Wastewater rate system that complied with PL92-500 and qualified the City for millions of dollars in Federal grants to build waste treatment facilities.  The basis for this system was my master’s thesis at Ohio State and saved the city $500,000 when an engineering firm bid to do the study was rejected.

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX ONLINE, Phoenix, Arizona, 2002 – Present

Instructor – Part Time

Part time instructor teaching undergraduate and graduate (MBA) finance courses. The work consists of writing lectures, developing discussion topics based upon weekly learning material, daily interact with students in an asynchronous Internet classroom, grade papers and problem assignments and prepare and grade final examinations.

Key Achievements:

·         The most important aspect of this work is to mentor non-financial students (mostly) to appreciate the role of finance and accounting in business organizations and to learn analysis techniques that will make them better employees and managers.
